A partnership between Maki and Associates and
the Aga Khan Development Network

Spanning nearly two decades, the unique design partnership between Pritzker Prize winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and the Aga Khan Development Network has resulted in a trilogy of signature buildings – The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat (Ottawa, Canada), the Aga Khan Museum (Toronto, Canada) and most recently the Aga Khan Centre (London, UK).
As part of the Open House Festival 2020, you are invited to meet Maki and Associates’ lead architect Gary Kamemoto and hear the fascinating story of how his firm’s partnership with AKDN evolved and took shape. Learn about the conceptual and technical approach as well as some of the challenges faced by the design and construction teams as they aimed to deliver to the ambitious aspirations of the client.
Kamemoto’s presentation will provide an in-depth look at the innovative processes and materials used to achieve this trio of iconic and distinct buildings that make up the Maki and Associates and AKDN trilogy. His visual presentation will be followed by a conversation with Victoria Jessen-Pike, the design consultant for the Aga Khan Centre in Kings Cross.

Lead architect of the trilogy, Gary Kamemoto is Director at Maki and Associates, responsible for their International Projects. Maki and Associates is an internationally recognised, award-winning architectural firm based in Tokyo, Japan and involved in projects worldwide. Maki and Associates is led by renowned Japanese architect and Pritzker Prize Winner Fumihiko Maki.
This webinar will be moderated by Victoria Jessen-Pike, an independent consultant who was part of the AKDN Design and Project team in King’s Cross London including the Aga Khan Centre.

Gary KamemotoDirector, Maki and AssociatesGary Kamemoto joined the practice of Maki and Associates in 1984 and has been the firm’s Director of International Projects since 2002. Working alongside Fumihiko Maki, he leads the design of the projects continuing the ethos and humanistic approach of the firm developed of over a half-century. Over this period, he has been the driving force behind the firm’s diverse portfolio of worldwide projects of high profile and significance.
Having been exposed and influenced by both Japanese and Western cultures, he has carried out the rigorous discipline of the making of architecture through craft and meticulous details to realize lasting quality from conceptual investigation through executed construction. A strong emphasis is placed on a process-oriented design and of discovery.
The works has spanned a wide range of building types of various scales, size, and program around the world. Included are 4 World Trade Center, the first building to be realized in the redevelopment of Ground Zero and Finalist for the 2016 International High-Rise Awards.
Other renowned projects include the MIT Media Lab, awarded the Boston Society of Architect’s Harleston Parker Medal honoring “the most beautiful building in the Boston Metropolitan Area from the last 10 years.”
Amongst his other achievements are the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. The Delegation project was the winner of a Governor General’s Medal in 2012, one of the highest honors for a built project in Canada. The Aga Khan Museum was recognized by the Ontario Association of Architects with the 2016 Design Excellence Award alongside the People’s Choice Award. The latest contribution to the Aga Khan Development Network is the Aga Khan Centre at King’s Cross, winner of the New London Awards People’s Choice Award.
He has taught at Tokyo’s Hosei University from 1999 – 2015 and has served as Visiting Lecturer and Critic at a number of Universities in Japan and the U.S. -
Victoria Jessen-PikeSenior Projects Director, Publica Associates
With a background in three-dimensional design, Victoria Jessen-Pike is an independent consultant with specialist expertise in the development of overall project visions and of specific design briefs. She has worked in architecture and design across a broad spectrum of project type and scale, with an emphasis on civic and cultural buildings. These projects range from academic buildings and museums, to concert halls and libraries through to urban masterplans. Beginning her career at Foster & Partners, Victoria’s role has evolved from design contributor to overall project lead. At David Chipperfield Architects (1995-2007), Victoria led a project office in New York for the conversion of the landmark American Radiator Building into the Bryant Park Hotel. Returning to London she was subsequently Design Director for a number of new museums including Turner Contemporary in Margate and The Hepworth in Wakefield. Between 2011 and 2018, Victoria was the client-side design and briefing lead for the Aga Khan Centre in Kings Cross. In partnership with a consortium of project contributors, and helmed by the Aga Khan Development Network, Victoria managed this project from the architect selection stage through to the occupation of the building. Victoria’s current role is with urban realm consultant, Publica Associates where, as Senior Projects Director, she contributes to a number of major projects in central London.
