Happy International Day of Education!
Last year was tough for everyone, with education being one of the hardest hit sectors. For many young girls around the world, like Laila, the hard-won right to schooling was not something easily put aside. Education professionals and students the world over have become a source of inspiration, with so many reacting to the new, challenging circumstances of the pandemic with strength and compassion.
In Afghanistan, as everywhere, the education sector was badly impacted by lockdown. Since Laila and her community have worked tirelessly for many years to overcome the barriers to girls’ education (watch the first part of her story here), to be denied this hard-won right seemed a bitter blow.
But no one involved was ready to give up!

Steps Towards Afghan Girls’ Education Success (STAGES) is AKF’s largest girls’ education programme globally. AKF is proud to work with a consortium of partners to implement this programme which includes CARE, Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services, Aga Khan Education Services, and the Afghan Education Production Organisation (AEPO). It is supported by the Afghan Ministry of Education and funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
